Is It A Good Idea To Have An Unassisted Natural Childbirth And The Reason Why Might You Need To?

The debate concerning unassisted natural childbirth and medical childbirth continues to rage. The medical profession is adamant that giving birth in a hospital is less hazardous in case a medical complication arises during the process, while those who support free birthing declare that most complications happen owing to medical involvement. So who is right and who is wrong? The answer is neither. It should be up to the mom-to-be what method she chooses to bring her newborn into the world.

There are people who are convinced that any chemical pain relief or surgical intervention may harm both mom and baby. Most moms merely want to maintain control of their own body during the labor and birth process. Some moms are perfectly happy to hand the whole process over to their pediatrician and that's absolutely okay. Everybody should do what they feel is right and not be bullied into a course of action which they may regret in the future.

So what exactly is an unassisted natural childbirth? Can a woman who has for example, an epidural or pain killing drugs, claim to have given birth naturally? Does it actually matter?

The all-important consideration is to deliver your baby into the world safely and without suffering more physical distress than you can endure. A number of women have an easy birth, others have a high threshold for discomfort while still others find the whole birth and labor process distressing. The main thing is not to feel remorseful if you have settled on giving birth the natural way and you discover you need pain medication during the procedure. The main objective is to deliver your child in safety while still looking after your own health so that you can care for your baby when you get home.

If you have decided on an unassisted birth, you might choose to consider some childbirth classes to help you cope with labor, especially if you are not planning on using pain relief such as an epidural. Go for classes organized outside the hospital system as a lot of hospitals do not support natural childbirth. Classes that teach the Bradley Method or Hypnobirthing are very popular.

If you have a supportive significant other, get them involved in the birth process. If you are on your own, consider hiring a Doula who can help you both physically and emotionally throughout the birth .

Birthing centers are best for moms who are strong and positive they are not going to require medical attention. These centers encourage unassisted natural childbirth, however it is important not to put your health, or your child's health at risk, merely because you are determined to give birth naturally. If you have any concerns about your ability to manage, there is no shame in having a medical childbirth. It's up to you!
