For a start, the chief producers of clone golf clubs are fully fledged golf companies. Their own research and development departments produce club designs that are manufactured using the same materials as the big OEM's. These clubs incorporate the same design principles such as club volume, moment of inertia and multi material irons, to name just a few.

Club design is dictated by the rules laid down by the game's governing bodies. Club heads have to conform to these limits, otherwise they are deemed non-conforming and prohibited for use in competition play. That's not limited to the pro tours either. Using a non-conforming driver in your monthly medal could end up in a disqualification.

The major producers of golf clones will submit their clubs to the game's governing bodies for approval (USPGA in the USA, R&A in Europe) same as all the big OEM's. This is an expensive undertaking and nobody making cheapo knock-offs would go to the expense and effort of submitting their clubs, only to see them rejected.

Take a driver for example. For a driver to be conforming, it has to have a volume of 460 cc maximum. It's not sufficient for a manufacturer to say their drivers are no bigger than 460 cc. The USPGA and the R&A have to say they aren't. If they are under the limit, they go on the Conforming Driver lists. If they fail the test, they are placed on the Non-Conforming Driver lists.

Quick point to note here. Some manufacturers of cheap knock-offs proudly proclaim their drivers are conforming pointing to the fact that their drivers are not on the non-conforming lists. That simply means they haven't been submitted for testing. If a club conforms, it's on the conforming list. If a club isn't on the non-conforming list, that doesn't make it conforming.

Designing and creating conforming clubs takes a lot of skill and attention to details. Get the build process wrong by a fraction of a percent and the clubs could well end up being non-conforming. Volume isn't the only limit the rules make. With limits on club-face rebound for example (the Coefficient of Restitution) potentially influenced by even the tiniest variation in face thickness, quality control is crucial.

Clone golf clubs from respected producers conform to the rules of the game and will be a lot easier on your wallet. Manufactured from the same materials as the big OEM's and with the same (or better) shafts, these are top quality clubs that will make the game that much more fulfilling. As a bonus, many of the big companies offer their clubs with custom fit options.

What you get is a set of high quality, conforming, custom built clubs that will play ever bit as good, if not better, than a set of expensive off-the-rack OEM's. What you won't get is the price tag.
